Dave Chappelle is an American stand-up comedian and actor who was born in 1973 in Washington, DC, and started doing stand-up during his high school years. It has been said that he got his inspiration for comedy from shows he watched while growing up. Nothing seemed to stop this young comedian as he decided not to go to college, but rather, pursued a career in comedy. Since he was still underage, he had his mom accompany him to shows in clubs as his legal guardian.
In 1993 Dave Chappelle made his film debut with Robin Hood: Men in Tights and a few years later he starred in the popular movie, Half Baked. He continued to take on acting roles and was cast in many films, including The Nutty Professor with Eddie Murphy, and Woo, You’ve Got Mail. It was at this time that his father passed away and he felt he had to re-evaluate his life. In 2000 he filmed the extremely popular comedy special, Killin’ Them Softly, and in 2002 he did Undercover Brother.
It was only in 2003 when Chappelle really reached stardom with his wildly popular Chappelle’s Show on Comedy Central. He received three Emmy Award nominations for his extremely controversial show where he often addressed issues about race and hosted musicians. He also caught the attention of high-profile individuals in the industry such as Oprah Winfrey, and was offered a $50 million TV deal from Comedy Central for an additional two-year contract.
It was at this point where he walked out on the show and only returned to the spotlight in 2013. He continued touring with his stand-up shows and over the next few years he released a series of acclaimed specials for Netflix.
